Humic acid consists of two parts, humic acid and fulvic acid, which are differentiated by their physical size. Both humic and fulvic acids act as important chelators, helping the plant with mineral uptake. The larger, humic acid, transports minerals to the outside of the cell membrane and releases the minerals for nutrient uptake. To gain optimal results, it is recommended to use humic acid in conjunction with kelp. Virginia Tech conducted a study on biostimulants which showed humic acid and kelp work 50% more efficiently when used in a 5:2 ratio (humic acid:kelp).
